In terms of pokemon this is already hands-down the best generation in the series. Every single last one so far has shown exceptional effort in terms of design and concept, and they’ve gone out of their way to choose interesting, distinct, and regionally thematic organisms as basis.
Look at the fucking old-timey cartoon personality in this BOXING COCONUT CRAB. It’s called CRABRAWLER.
And, you know, I think the reason we’re seeing this much effort is because, between XY and Sun/Moon, pokemon experienced its very, very first SUCCESSFUL competitor in twenty years, with a little franchise called Yo-Kai watch soundly beating it in game sales, toy sales and television ratings across the board.Yo-Kai watch’s rabid popularity has died back down a little in Japan, but still the strongest rival Pokemon has ever had. See what some healthy competition can do? Everybody wins in the po-kai war.
oh what does digimon not exist to you people
i love yokai watch but cmonnnn
While Digimon has been wonderful and still going strong, it never did reach these levels:
A “rivalry” like this isn’t as hostile in Japan as we’re used to, though. In the 90′s we had Sega and Sony advertising like “LOL WHO WANTS TO PLAY A FAT PLUMBER??” and Nintendo still just focused on its own merits and tipped its hat to would-be adversaries. Pokemon vs. Yo-kai watch just means that both will try a little harder to bring fans something that really feels fresh.
The rise of Yo-Kai Watch has happened entirely in the downtime between pokemon generations so the real moment of truth will be when Sun and Moon actually drop. The third core Yo-kai game just came out in Japan to pretty massive sales already.
