They’re in pain.

They don’t like hugs.

They’re not good at giving hugs. Hugging doesn’t come naturally to them.

They don’t like you.

They just met you, and only hug people they know well.

They have a cultural/religious reason for abstaining from physical contact with you.

They’re very sensitive to smells or chemicals and your perfume/cologne may set off a migraine/allergic reaction/wave of nausea that will ruin the rest of their day (or longer).

You smell bad but don’t realize it.

They smell bad and DO realize it.

They’re feeling overheated, and mashing bodies with you will only make them hotter.

They have a history of trauma that makes physical contact/closeness with you uncomfortable or triggering.

They weren’t expecting to have to hug you, and it causes them anxiety to do it now.

They feel unsafe/uncomfortable around you.

A hug doesn’t mean the same thing to them that it does to you.
