Hey there friends!
So over the past week or so I’ve noticed that the fanmade animated video for “Ghost” by Mystery Skulls has gotten really, really popular! I saw the video and it’s absolutely fantastic, but a lot of people have been mistaking it for the official music video and it makes me sort of sad to see people’s interest in this really great band that’s just starting to get traction end at “Ghost”. So, instead of being one of those obnoxious “I liked this before it was COOL” fans, I extend my hand to you folks who have just discovered how fucking great this music is and would like to share with you a little more of their music!
As I said before, the animated video by MysteryBen27 is not the official music video. The original is actually referenced in the animated version. If you look at the center left painting at 1:12 in the animated video, you can see the priest character from the official video. Watch the official “Ghost” music video here. It’s a really hilarious Exorcist spoof. (If you don’t like jump scares, mind the very mild one at the end. Just hit the pause button when the music stops. You’ll see it coming from a mile away.)
Also, “Ghost” is from Mystery Skulls’ most recent album, Magic, and while it is the intended single from that album, it’s not the only song on that album that’s really great. I highly recommend “Paralyzed”, “Hellbent”, and the title song, “Magic”. For 90’s nostalgia factor, “Magic” features Brandy, who I haven’t heard from in a billion years, and anyone who is a fan of Welcome to Night Vale will find the music video for “Paralyzed” really funny.
They also have an earlier album, EP, which just has a few songs, but all of them are pretty great. You can buy the whole thing on Bandcamp for a dollar if you want to support Mystery Skulls (do it!) but for starters, “Money” and “Brainsick“ are really great songs. "Money” is my ALL TIME FAVORITE track by them. The lyrics are great and will soothe all your worries for a while. The guy who did the animated “Ghost” video also did a neat Phoenix Wright fan animation for that song, so if you liked that video, watching his “Money” video might be a good choice.
I’ll admit I was mildly peeved at first that people were so into this one video but didn’t look into their other music, but it can be hard to get into a new band without a few song recs, so I hope I helped some people fall in love with some new music! I’d really love to see Mystery Skulls get a big following! Thanks for reading this!
